iB Curriculum Guest Speaker: Caroline Macgillivray of Beauty Night Society “The Reluctant Leader”

Caroline MacGillivray became aware of the plith of survival sex trade workers in Vancouver while volunteering at WISH Drop in Centre in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. This experience shifted her life from focusing on her acting career to the creation of Beauty Night Society. What was once a pipe dream became a reality. In 12 years, Beauty Night has become an award-winning volunteer run charity. It impacts the lives of the stakeholders and the women who participate. Caroline shares her story of the ripple effect that one’s actions can have on a community and the world around us. Good and bad.

“When one has hope, anything is possible, ” says MacGillivray. “Sometimes when we do something that feels right, that resonates with other people. They want to join you on the adventure. The ripple effect of community building is a beautiful thing.”

Please watch this video, created by a group of grade 10 students at Balmoral Secondary School. They raised $5000 to help Caroline better the lives of impoverished women and youth through Beauty Night.

Join Caroline on March 27th at 10am to learn more about her mission. Can’t be there in person? Follow @BeautyNight and institute B @instituteb on Twitter using #iBCurriculum and join the conversation.
